There’s nothing quite like catching the breeze on the coastal path between Greenock and Gourock. Whether you’re commuting, keeping fit, or just out for a Sunday glide, Inverclyde is a brilliant place to be on two wheels.
But as the roads get busier and our cycle networks expand, it pays to know the score. At Freedom Inverclyde, we’re all about getting you out there safely. Here’s a quick, no-nonsense look at the Highway Code and how to make the most of our local routes.
The Highway Code: It’s Not Just for Cars
The biggest thing to remember is the "Hierarchy of Road Users." Essentially, it means those who can do the most damage (drivers) have the most responsibility to look out for everyone else.
As a cyclist, that gives you a bit more "right of way" at junctions, but it also means you need to keep a sharp eye out for pedestrians - especially on our shared paths.
Two Big Rules for Your Next Ride:
-
Take the Lane: Don’t feel like you have to hug the kerb. The Code now says you should ride in the centre of the lane on quiet roads or when approaching junctions. It makes you visible and stops "squeezed" overtakes.
-
Be a Good Neighbour: When you’re on the National Cycle Network paths, slow down for walkers. A quick ring of the bell or a "morning!" goes a long way.
Local Highlight: The Greenock to Gourock Glide
If you haven't cycled the waterfront lately, you’re missing out. Taking the path from Custom House Quay past Battery Park and into Gourock is arguably the best flat ride in the West of Scotland.
-
The Perk: It’s mostly traffic-free and the views across to the Argyll hills are world-class.
-
The Challenge: Watch out for the Clyde wind! It can be a bit of a shift on the way back if the wind is against you.
-
The Pitstop: There are plenty of spots for a coffee or an ice cream in Gourock before you head back.
Safety Without the Lecture
We’re lucky that more 20mph zones are popping up locally, making Greenock and Gourock much friendlier for bikes. To keep your ride stress-free, just remember the basics:
-
Light up: If the haar is in or the sun is dropping, get your lights on.
-
Ditch the distractions: Keep the headphones off so you can hear what’s happening around you.
-
Check your gear: If you’re on an e-bike, remember you’ve got a bit more weight and speed behind you - give yourself plenty of space to brake.
